This laptop is cute, perfect size on my lap. It's not heavy at all, which is a plus since it states that it's 5 lbs. Processor runs fairly smooth, fast. It does NOT have a webcam, I don't know why every website I searched up about this model says that it does. I got this for $100 less at Office Depot. Overall, this laptop is great for everyday use.

I'm not a computer guru, I can't quote specs at a person, but I know when something gets the job done and this little guy does. Today I ran for six hours on battery, had another hour and a half left when I plugged in. During this time, I was surfing the web, streaming youtube and hulu, and working with Photoshop and Pro Show Producer. It even handled encoding video with Producer like a champ. It never got hot, just luke warm, it never seemed to lag, set up was a breeze, touchpad is nice and responsive, it's just been an absolute joy and it looks beautiful to boot. The speakers aren't very loud, but for everything else you get with this machine, I'm not going to quibble or take away stars for speaker volume. I love it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a portable machine with long battery life that still packs a little power.

I was going to purchase a 52 inch television for around 1200 dollars but came across this item on amazon and it is half the price but double the size of a television. In addition to watching movies on this, I will be able to surf the internet. I ordered it as quickly as I could before they sell out. I can't wait until it arrives! Hope the delivery person helps me get it into the house. What a great deal!

No issues so far. What I really liked is it's battery life. Gave me full 5 hours when connected with internet. Good for personal day to day use like internet, email, word processing, playing music etc. One thing I didn't like is speaker which is very low. Otherwise its a good laptop for personal use.

Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q870 TruBrite

After exhaustive research, I decided the Toshiba Cosmio x505-870 powerhouse had the best specs for the best price. This was the next in a long line of Toshiba laptops for me. I was hooked after my first one about 10 years ago. Due to the design, durability, price, and support, Toshibas have always been my first choice and I would, and do, recommend them to everyone that asks. The Cosmio X505-870 is my new passion. My only complaints are minor and cosmetic. The slick surface of the keyboard and the awkward multimedia and power buttons are the only hindrances I have found. The new, positive design elements far outway the problems though. The toned-down color scheme, the disable button for the touchpad, and the beautiful 18.4 screen(although not full 1080p) to name a few. There were some issues with the BIOS that Toshiba addressed directly, so I would suggest updating the BIOS immediatly after creating your restore disks. I don't think it would be possible to regret the purcase of this system, and I recommend it whole-heartidly.

Well in a HUGE surprise my lovely wife got me this laptop for Christmas. Honestly it is virtually perfect. If I was going to spec out a netbook/laptop this would have been it. The Low Voltage Celeron is great for saving battery life. It is also sufficient to run Windows 7 Home Premium, surfing, doc prep, email, and remote access. I am currently running Windows 7 on a monster Core i7 and this little machine can hold it's own with the monster when doing the simple things mentioned above. I would not try and render video with it or anything that is processor intensive, however it is very sufficient at playing videos and photo edits. The LED screen is bright, clear and AMAZING.

The only things that are a bit troubling are: 1) Due to the shiny case all finger prints and smudge marks are noticeable. 2) While 2Gbs of memory is good - for $50.00 I increased the memory to 4gbs. The system can only use 3.3Gb of the 4GBs due to the 32bit operating system, but the extra memory certainly helped. 3) Also for some reason my wireless network card intermittently stops working, but a quick reboot and that fixes that. I am assuming that it is a Windows driver and I am looking for an update.

I give this machine a 5 of 5 due to the fact that it does everything that it represents it does. If you are looking for a lightweight, low power, long battery life laptop/netbook, then I would highly recommend this computer.

"Let me start by saying that I use my computer for much more than average daily use. I record multi track audio (i.e. home studio), as well as average daily tasks. I also work in a place that is very much pro Mac/anti PC. That's okay, I'm not biased either way, you just get more horsepower for your money with PC.

I downsized from my desktop system which was a Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM on XP Pro. It was working, but I needed more horsepower (i.e. faster processor and more RAM), and I also figured a laptop that could suit my home studio needs would be perfect because I could then be mobile as well.

A lot of research went into purchasing a laptop. I left no stone unturned, and looked at ALL the models, up to a certain price range (under $1000), even models with lesser specs in certain areas than this one.

After much research, I decided this has everything I need. I've had it about three weeks now, and it's a great machine. Even some of my coworkers who prefer Macs said it's a nice laptop, and we all know computers where I work. After seeing the specs and the pricetag on this, they agreed that I did well.

My only gripe about it is that because it's a Vaio, it comes with TONS of extra Vaio software (as well as other trial software, and other programs that I have no use for). Three weeks later, I'm still experimenting with which Vaio software I should and should not uninstall. Some Vaio programs are necessary to operate things like the function keys, where others are not necessary. I will not post a list here, but search out the individual programs and make your own decision. Other than that, this thing ROCKS!!! Nice clear graphics, fast processor, good RAM (I plan to expand mine up to the allowable 8GB though), and totally KILLS my old Core 2 Duo machine. I was able to pull up sessions from my external hard drive after installing my recording software, and sessions that would nearly max out my Core 2 Duo machine barely had this computer running at 50% system resources. Beautiful, just what I needed. The hyper threading on the new Core i series is amazing.

I bought an e-SATA express card to use with the card slot to stream my external hard drive, I run an audio interface off the firewire port, and an iLok. I'm also going to purchase a firewire express card with a Texas Instrument chipset in it to see which transfer rate is better between the e-SATA card and the FW card (it 'should' be the e-SATA, but I'm still going to try it). I also plan on purchasing a wireless mouse, full size keyboard, and 22" monitor, so basically this laptop will sit off to the side as I record, mix, and edit audio. This is everything I need at the moment, and is working out as an audio computer as good or better than I thought. I highly recommend it. Oh, and regarding the Vaio software - for the average user, most of it is actually pretty cool, I just like to run my machine as clean and lean as possible so that most of it's resources are available when it comes time to lay down audio tracks."

I built my own f series only deference is graphics card (330m), (1080p LCD screen) , back-lit keyboard.

Pros: This laptop is great, the processor is pretty fast. The graphics card is pretty good, i am able to play most games, cs:s, dod:s, half life, crysis mid settings minor lag, but pretty decent frame rates! Quake wars, enemy territory and Fallout 3, no lag, everything at high. The keyboard is great, though it makes squeaky noise at times still pretty good. The computer is built pretty good construction. Bluetooth has some good functions, the quick vaio assistance button is a good feature. The lcd screen is decent.

Cons: Firstly 2 USB ports! May sound sufficient for some, but 2 is hardly enough for me, maybe at least 3 would of been preferred. Then the LCD brightness, not great, it is a bit dim, brightness is not the best, my sisters Toshiba has a greater brightness at under 600$. Then the speakers, they are not that great, the sound is fine, could of been improved.

Overall good laptop for $ 1200. Overall i am satisfied with it, it is a stylish yet fast laptop. It lacks some things which i would of preferred, but i payed for what i really wanted and needed!

"UPDATED" To restate the 2 usb ports, i have found out that the (E-Sata can be used as a 2.0 USB PORT). So to clear some things up, this computer technically has 3 usb ports. Thanks to Mark D. Neathery.

Do not hesitate on this one, just buy it. Item arrived on time and packaging was great. Great deal for the money. My son was on for 3 hrs and did not feel hot. Something to remember when reading any review, most people who are happy with their product don't write reviews. People who like to leave reviews write reviews and people who are VERY VERY unhappy write reviews, so just always be aware of the biased.

I love this computer with every bit of my heart. I'm not a gamer so I dont have issues with it not being us to gaming snuff. I mostly use the internet to surf and microsoft office and countless chatting programs. Someone at one point said the screen was so shinny that any light source makes it completely useless, I don't seem to have this problem because I've been using it everyday and have never been blinded by light. The unit is lighter weight than my 15.5inch dell insipron (disaster computer) that is currently being replaced with this model. Someone else bitched about getting a blue screen of death, which I have yet to see after two weeks (they claimed it happened within the first hour). Another person said there was difficulty connecting a Bluetooth mouse, which I agreed with, as I just connected my mouse after about 30 minutes of struggling with it. However, it was finally connected after a 5 minute chat with Sony technical support, so it was more user error than computer. There not web button on mine, instead there is an assist button. When I clicked it I was prompted to start up in safe mode, so I am assuming that the assist button would be useful if you computer crashes. The i3 processor is crazy fast, as is windows 7. I really had no problem with vista and decided that everyone hated it because they were told to hate it, but windows 7 is quite amazing. It runs faster, extremely user/idiot friendly. The keyboard is really nice too, I was kind of nervous about this because the keys are all spaced out, unlike normal keyboards where all the buttons are tapered and adjacent to one another, but its actually really comfortable to type on. One draw back is that earlier models (before the i3 processor came out) were bluray players as well, which they took away probably because it was just too good of a computer for the $800 price tag. The speakers are a little lame, but its a laptop and I wouldn't expect a whole lot of them to begin with as long as they make noise that I can hear when I need to hear it I'm happy. Something else I like is that it has an optical drive. I know this seems like a trival thing but some of the other computer is the same class as this one have removed CD/DVD drives all together which a major deal breaker for me! Someone else complained that there are no shortcut buttons for volume control...really? How lazy are you that you can't hit "fn" F2 for mute? It one extra button, and the shortcut buttons on the dell never really worked well for me anyway.

For those of you looking at dells at well let me tell you that I built this EXACT same computer on Dells website and it was going to cost at least $100 bucks more which seems like highway robbery to me.

Something to be aware of, apparently new computers do not come with recovery disks anymore. So they highly encourage you to go out, buy a blank DVD, and create a recovery disk pretty much RIGHT out of the box.

Hope this review helps!!!

This is my third Vaio laptop, and while this brand is pricier than its competition, I'm very happy with this computer (and its older sibs, both of which still work).

Physically, this isn't a tiny netbook. At 6 pounds, it's not something I'm going to be schlepping on airplanes, but that isn't what I bought it for. As always, the Vaio screen is lovely and bright, and widescreen. The ports seem to be well-placed. And the aesthetics are quite nice -- it's a brushed, fingerprint-resistant silver. It's really quite fast (no choking or hard drive whirring while loading programs, etc.) and it's extremely quiet. They keyboard took a little while to adapt to, but it's nice and roomy, with space between the keys. The touchpad works well, and the DVD drive is also smooth and quiet. The HDMI port works as it should with my LCD tv.

I haven't tested battery life as I don't plan to use this as an on-the-go machine.

I didn't know much of what to expect from Windows 7, and while this isn't a Windows 7 review, it works smoothly on this machine. Most of my Windows XP software works, with a few exceptions.

As usual, Sony packs in way too much preinstalled crap on their laptops, and I really wish they wouldn't, but I guess that's the price of buying a machine like this. I do wish they'd include a disc to let you install this stuff, rather than requiring that you uninstall it. Surprisingly though, Google Chrome is one of the preinstalled programs, so it is good to have a decent browser right out of the box. One thing Sony doesn't include much of at all is written documentation. Other than a tiny Getting Started booklet, all the documentation is on the machine itself.

Overall, I'm pleased with this computer so far. For the price, you are getting a near-desktop replacement that happens to be a laptop.

Well, if you are looking for a huuuuge laptop.. this is the one. Its got a lot of nice features and its really pretty and the sound is great. I bought this for game and movie play which is perfect. Everything runs fast and smooth. I love it. I also needed lots of memory to store tons of photos. This does all of that for me... not to mention the pictures look ten times better on this screen. Love it. Some negatives, The laptop is very glossy.. shows lots of finger prints. Also, be aware that microsoft office is only a trial software package. I guess I didnt read the fine print. Also, not sure why the serial and part numbers didnt work when trying to register my laptop online. ?? Anyway, Just keep in mind that this is HUUUGE for a laptop. Its not so easy traveling with it at all. Its rather heavy and there are hardly any choices as far as case covers and cool bags to carry it in go. I may end up buying a toshiba net book for travel. I gave five stars because TOSHIBA is awesome. I love this laptop. Pretty much can use it as a desktop because of its size.

This laptop has many excelent features, but unfortunately Toshiba decided to put all of that power inside a very cheap shell. If you need to do much typing, then you are going to be extremely frustrated with the keyboard that comes with the laptop. First of all the keyboard is pushed all the way to the left, because Toshiba decided to include a full size number key pad to the right (who in the world needs a number key pad this days?), so find your self having to seat further to the left in order to be able to type. This may sound like a minor thing, but you will know what I mean once you have to use this machine.

However that is not the worst part of the design. The keys are very smood and flat, bunch up against each other, so you can not tell if your fingers are in the correct position. In my experience 9 out 10 times you make mistake with the initial placement of your fingers in the keyboard. I never realize how many times I take my hands away from the keboard when I use my computer, until now.

Is a shame that a company like Toshiba would spend on making a laptop with great features, at a reasonable price, but could not design it in a way that it could be easy to use. I have an older Toshiba Satellite laptop, and the key board is very good. Why in the world would they change it? The reason why most keyboard have indentetions in the keys, and a way for the user to determine the placement just by feel is because after so many years it has proven to be the most effective way. Do not change what is working well, unless you are certain that you can improve upon it.

The experience using this keyboard has been so frustrating, that I most definatelly do not recomend this product. Pay the extra hundred dollars for another brand with the same features, but user friendly.

Good Luck with the purchase....

November 21 Review Actualization

Well, it has been almost a month since I bought my T135 and I can say I love this little Titan.

Pros:

-LIGHTWEIGHT
-Powerful. With Windows 7 64 edition, I can get as much performance as a my other Core 2 Duo Toshiba Sattellite A135 laptop.
- I can get 9 hours plus of battery life (Eco Mode). As per the other person stating that he can get only 4 hours of battery life, that is in full power mode. Try to get 4 hours of battery life at full power from any other machine and you will fail miserably
- Great Graphics
- Great sound if you do as I stated above:
- Wifi 802.11N!!! I mean, I an get my 802.11N signal from some 200 meters in my garden!!!
- Gorgeous looks
-FAST, FAST, FAST
I have edited video and music (iTunes and a couple of DVD rippers) and it does them in a couple of minutes
- IT'S a TOSHIBA!!!!
- Video conferencing (Skype and Messenger) it's really good, although the camera it's only 1.3 megapixels
- After 10 hours of use, at full power, it barely gets warm. You can put it on your bag right away
- Ultra Low Voltage means Ultra Low Energy Consumption. I mean guys, we have to be environmentally conscious. This babe just uses 19V of energy at full power, down to 8-10 Volts at Eco Mode.

NEUTRAL

- I hate on every laptop (no matter what brand) the touch pads. I always use an external mouse.

CONS

- You can do a fingerprint exam on the laptop. I do not know why it gets so finger dirty (and believe me, I wash my hands very often). I bought a GelySkin for the exterior and it's a great add-on

Hope this review is usefull

The mouse is annoying; I did read about this but thought it was not a big deal. Having only the thing for the left and right click need some getting use to but the big issue is the erratic behavior and some time it freezes up.
I am not a picky person so things like the flexing keyboard and your finger prints all over are no big deal to me.
The other issue is the heat; this laptop gets really hot on the left side.

Great things about the Satelite:
+ 16" wide screen display - it's beautiful
+ Fast, starts up in a couple of seconds and no waiting on your apps
+ Huge 500GB hard drive.
+ Windows 7, I wasn't expecting much, but no problems, runs without issues
+ Microsoft Office, installed, free for 60 days
+ Huge high quality speakers, this machine is music and movie ready.
+ Attractive
+ A little heavy but not bad for its size.
+ Toshiba is very reliable
+ Motion detector locks the hard drive in place when it detects the laptop is being jostled around.

Could be better:
> Light above track pad too bright
> Keys are LOUD
> Norton installed and bugs you about paying every time you log on

Overall, this is a great laptop. SOme of the display lights are a little bright and the keypad is noisy. I can forgive that though because this laptop is so fast. I'm never waiting anymore. Windows 7 is proving to be very reliable and easy to use.

Initially, the touch pad was "helping" me and this was really annoying. To turn off some of the trackpad features that do things for you: Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound, under the Devices and Printers section click on Mouse. Another dialog pops up, CLick on the Device Settings tab, then on the Settings button. From there you can set up the touch pad the way you want it.

I upgraded my laptop to a 12 cell battery and that battery lasts about 7 or 8 hours. If you can afford the extra battery, it's worth it. THe 12 cell does take about 2 hours to charge though.

My friends who work in computer repair say they get less Toshibas in the shop than any other brand and highly recommend them.

Buy a large laptop case to carry it in. It will not fit in a standard size case.

Norton is slow and a pain, I uninstalled it and installed Vipre.

we wanted a lap top for our vacation to florida. We found this one at Staples for $499.00. We have only had it for a month and so far we love it. We have only two issues with this lap top. #1 when you set up a guest on the computer you can not give the guest a name. #2 the mouse pad is super sensitive, I called tech support 5 days ago and they have not called me back. This does not say much for toshiba tech support. The first person I talked to could not figure out how to change the sensitivity. I would buy this product again.

It's a very good product for the price I paid. Totally satisfied with it. Delivery was on schedule. Great experience. Amazon.com is one of the best places to purchase and they got the best deals.

Chose this model because it got a good rating from Consumer Reports. My first Toshiba. So far, seems like great quality for the price. Easy set-up. Speakers are so-so, but then I didn't buy it for that feature. Screen is bright and beautiful. Love the extended keyboard. High hopes for a good relationship with my new laptop.

Out of the box this unit worked flawlessly. This is the most attractive notebook I've ever owned. Someone across the room heard a music video I was watching and said "that computer has great sound." It is great to have my numeric keypad back for crunching numbers.

Mobile broadband and 16GB flash drive USBs worked as expected. So did WiFi and a hardwired network. The 17.3" video is just awesome. This is my second, larger, notebook and I'll never go smaller again.

Very satisfied, great price and fast, free shipping from Amazon.

-Size is AMAZING (could also be a con, due to lack of case selection available)
-Speed - The Core i5 430M (2.26) with Turbo Boost is nice, outperforms my Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4).
-RAM - 4GB DDR3 is expandable to 8GB.
-Graphics - The GeForce GTS 330M GDDR5 1GB is an excellent mobile video card.

Cons

-No restore discs shipped with the system.
-No back-lit keyboard
-No Bluetooth
-Screen is too reflective, very hard to sit on my shaded porch and see the screen.
-Touchpad seems a little choppy. But I use my A4Tech mouse 95% of the time anyway.

All non-issues to be honest, but some people might find these a problem

Other

-The glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet.
-The media keys are a little irritating, I just disabled them, no biggie.
-I did a LOT of research before I chose this. My next choice would have been an Alienware M17x, but this is a much better buy.

All in all, this is a magnificent system, Excellent cost to performance. You wont find a better gaming system at this price.

Amazon merged the two models into one page and fixed most of their info, but they have the battery life listed as nine hours in one place and six hours in another; the six hour figure is correct (thanks, Philip!).

Also, the cheaper model (T115D-S1120) has a single core 1.6 GHz processor, not a dual core 1.5 GHz processor. This is currently still incorrect on one part of the page.

Very fast and responsive laptop with expansive battery life. The 1366x768 screen is sharp and very bright too, with much crisper whites than the other 3 LCDs on my desktop. Solid build quality on this and whisper quiet, compared to my Acer Aspire 4530 14inch that this replaced. Total usable capacity on drive shows at 455GB out of the box. I'm not sure whether it's the 4100 processor or Windows 7, but this machine screams compared to my prior Vista laptop with an Athlon X2 dual-core QL-60. Performance with Microsoft Office Beta 10 is also exceptional, with Microsoft Excel opening in milliseconds compared to seconds on the Acer. I'm a suit spending lots of time on planes, and not a gamer--so I can't comment on how it performs in 3D graphics but that's not my use case anymore (unfortunately). They keyboard is a bit cramped--but you quickly get used to it after a few days. And the trade-off for thin and light far outweighs having a much larger keyboard.

The biggest bonus is that my machine did not come with the usual bloatware that plagues most other new laptops, so the out-of-box experience was smooth and painless. For the price, I don't think you can find a better deal: 4GB RAM, Win 7 64 bit, 6+ hour battery life and a half-terabyte hard drive for well under a grand. There may be smaller and faster laptops out there, but not for the money.

I was torn between getting a netbook or upgrade my several year old laptop. I do a lot of traveling so I liked the idea of the smaller netbooks that were lightweight and easy to carry around. I didn't like that fact that they were underpowered and had low screen resolution so I was hesitant about buying one.

My main criteria were

1. Lightweight and portable
2. Powerful enough to handle video and other media without too much struggle
3. Long battery life

I started looking at laptops but most were no lighter than my current laptop and had battery power lasting around 3 or 4 hours (unless I went with a Mac...no thank you). I looked at various netbooks such as the million that Asus offers and liked the long battery life but the Intel Atom chip just seemed too weak for my liking. So I was stuck between underpowered netbook and too big to lug around laptop.

I made a trip to Best Buy and saw the newly released Toshiba Satellite laptops. I like the design, bigger than a netbook but smaller than a laptop and I liked the fact that they run dual core processors (at least this model and the one Best Buy had). Seemed to meet my needs in the middle.

I decided to give this laptop a try but had a decision to make. Do I buy this model from Amazon (T135-S1310) for $700 or do I buy the model at Best Buy (T135-S1309) for $550. Confused as to that main differences between the two, I started doing some research. The Best Buy model seemed to have everything that the Amazon model had with the exception of 1gb less of RAM. Well, I can upgrade to 4gb easily and cheaply enough so the $150 gap still works in my favor but then I noticed that the Best Buy model is only running 32bit Windows 7. Not knowing if it will accept a 64 bit operating system (i.e. is the computer only 32 bit) I decided to spend a little more and get it from Amazon. Plus, I was able to get it in red which looks very nice (sans the fingerprints!). Not sure if the 64bit makes that much of a difference but at least I can run 4gb of RAM and have it recognized.

The laptop works as I would expect. Size is perfect for me to travel with. It is much smaller in overall size compared to my Dell 15 inch and the weight of abut 3.8 pounds feels like a feather to my Dell which comes in close to 6.5 pounds. It is significant!!!! Overall, I can't complain about the speed of the computer as I was not expecting it to rival the new I7's coming out. My older laptop runs an Intel, Core Duo (not Core 2) at 1.66ghz and the Toshiba seems to compete with that very well, probably a bit faster due to Windows 7 Home Premium. I don't feel like I downgraded on my laptop by using this.

The wireless N network card had no issues finding my home network and connecting. My speed tests showed me getting almost 12mbps download speeds compared to my G laptop that gets about 7mbps. So the N speeds are faster. This was my first device that could utilize my D-Link DIR-655 N router so I am glad it actually works!

I have played a bit with video online with Hulu, Netflix and stuff I have created and it handles it fairly well. HD content can get a bit choppy at times but does play smoothly unless something else decides to run in the background. This is one area that you must sacrifice when buying such a small computer for this price, no dedicated graphics card. Not a deal breaker since most things seems to run well.

Sound is a big issue and my one main complaint. At full volume, you can barely hear anything out of the main speakers. This will be useless to use unless a set of external speakers or headphones are used. Hopefully this can be fixed in some future firmware/driver update but who knows.

Battery life is amazing. In Eco mode, you can run this for close to the 9 hours it is listed at. Of course, video or other media will cut that down quite a bit but I am averaging around 7 hours per charge with a decent amount of video/music playing. This is a great feature for travelers.

I did remove most of the preinstalled software that came with the machine as I find most of it useless but I left most of the Toshiba stuff on it to see if any of it is worth keeping for now. The face recognition software is cool but I am not sure how useful it will be over time as I will be the only user of the computer and I don't keep any important files on it. I guess it is for bragging rights that I have that capability.

I will try and post updates as I use this but right now I am completely satisfied with my purchase. Oh, as you already know, this does not come with an optical drive so if you need one, you either need an external or skip this machine all together.

****Update****
JMesa....thank you!!!!!! Your audio tweak worked. I can fianlly hear the other perosn on the nd of my video calls now!! It's strange how low the volume is until you push all the equalizer adjustments to the top. Wouldn't want to play music through headphones with these levels but at least I can finally hear stuff!. Makes this purchase even better!! Big fan of this laptop and Windows 7.....so much I upgraded all 3 machines in my house!

****One more Update*****

Had to write a quick update to express how happy I am that this laptop is a lot more rugged than it appears! I was carrying a few things from my kitchen to my basement yesterday and had my laptop resting on top of the stuff I was carrying. It slipped off and fell on my tile kitchen floor. Bateery came carshing off and I could see the laptop bounce a bit (it was about a 4 foot drop!). I first impression was....there goes $700! Hwever, I popped the battery back in, tunred it on and eveything is fine. Not even a scratch or dent! If this was my 100 pound Dell, it would have shattered into a million pieces and my floor would probably need replacing. Toshiba difinitely made a laptop worthy of business travel combining lightweight, power, and now...sturdiness. Is it bulletproof too? I hope I never have to find out.

Oh, and I just got back from a cross country trip (Boston to Seattle) and my Toshiba performed wonderfully during the whole trip. Even the video conferencing with my my wife and son using the hotel's free wi-fi connection worked well under Live Messenger (haven't tried Skype with it yet). The camera quality is a little blah compared to my 2mp camera on my desktop, but I can live with it!

I got this laptop about 1 week ago, and I am generally pleased with the quality. Everything worked smoothly out of the box, and it's been working flawlessly with my wireless N D-link router. Toshiba's functions key controls for hibernating, changing video output, etc are well designed and intuitive to use.

On the minus side, the speakers are a bit tinny sounding. The video output is adequate for casual movie viewing, but will not satisfy someone looking for HD like video. This notebook has integrated graphics without a discrete video card and would not support high end games with 3D graphics. I also could not get an older game like diablo 2 to work. Additionally, Toshiba does note recommend trying to upgrade the video card (although it's possible), and doing so would void the warranty.

On a side note, I tried this computer with Toshiba Dynadock and did not find the speed sufficient for smooth operation. I would not try to dock this computer, or in general any computer that is not designed to be docked.

Overall, this is good computer for the price. It will be good for work and casual video viewing, but do not plan on playing games or using it for watching high quality video.

Acer Aspire 4540-1047 14-Inch

I am really excited to write to write one of the first ever user review for the Acer 4540 14 inch Windows 7 Laptop. Well I got this Laptop about 2 weeks ago and have been using it since. The configuration I own has an AMD Athlon II M300 processor that clocks at 2 Ghz and I am assuming that this is probably the lowest end configuration of this Laptop. For some reason the Acer USA webpage does not have this Laptop listed in the products link. While searching for a Laptop, Initially, I was actually eying the Acer Aspire 5542-1462 which has got almost similar features just that its 15.6 inch. When I went down to the store and saw the Laptop I found it to be too large to carry around. That's when I changed my options to a 14 inch laptop. I am a big admirer of AMD processors and almost every computer of mine at home has an AMD processor. Just as I touched upon the fact I might just mention "no AMD processors do not have a heating problem". I am not sure on the US but in India the moment you happen to evaluate the idea of purchasing an AMD based system, the storekeeper tries to quote "this" standard statement and evade the interested buyer away to purchasing an Intel. No personal grudges against Intel, it's also perfectly good processor just that AMD also happens to be good. The good thing about buying an AMD based system is that it comes with either an Nvidia or ATI (now AMD chipset).
Well coming back to this laptop, it's based on the AMD M880G chipset. It's got an ATI Radeon Mobility Radeon HD 4200 on board graphics with 256 MB shared memory. There is an HDMI port with HDCP feature. The acer page states that the ATI graphic card also claims to has some video decoding capability like MPEG-2 DVD, WMV9/VC-1 (Windows® Media Video 9, VC-1 standard), H.264/AVC decoding. Need to verify this sometime, and if ture, is a good feature add on.
On the audio front this laptop seems to be real great. It's got a Realtek HD sound card. The icing on the cake is the Optimized third-generation Dolby® Home Theater audio enhancement which makes movie watching experience very pleasurable. I have tried some DVD's (one which had 5.1 sound Dolby Digital) and experienced a great surround effect. It seems to convert the 5.1 channel sound of the DVD and encode it to a Dolby Headphone like thing which enables experiencing 5.1 sound through an ordinary pair of headphone/ earphone. I tried several movies with this features on and off and believe me the experience is almost close to tha of a real home theatre. Probably would rate the experience as 70% of what you could get out of a high end Home Theatre system. But again this is quite something to ask for as it comes virtually free with this laptop. Some documentation on this feature can be found at [...]

Other must have features the laptop has got is a muti card reader Webcam (really very clear it is crystal eye indeed). Some features that could have been there would have been a Blue Tooth and a Blu Ray disk. The battery seems to last for 2 hours+ withdecnt lelev of computing. For those who are more CPU power frenzy I would suggest to go for a Turion II based configuration of this Laptop. (Which I am assuming would be there as with the Acer 5542). Windows 7 runs real smooth on this one. I tried the VM Ware Player and run an Open Suse 11 along with several applications. The performance of the gues OS(Suse 11) was great and even the remaining programs did not take a hit. The RAM usage shot up to 2.6 GB with several applications including the VM Player running Open Suse 11.
Overall a great Laptop for basic processing and multimedia activities. For an Audiphile the Dolby Home Theatre v3 would be an eye Candy. One piece of advice to those looking out for this laptop, please assess your usage of the Laptop and then make a conscious decision. In my case I just thought that I got a very high end laptop from say an era of 6 months ago for a very good price and I am sure this one should serve all my computing needs for 2-3 years after which an upgrade is inevitable so why spend a bomb.

Acer Aspire AS1410-2920 11.6-Inch

product details

I purchased the Acer AS1410-2920 in January 2010, and it rocks. After doing countless comparisons and research I decided that any Acer 1410 series WITH THE CELERON DUAL CORE SU2300 processor would work. In a nutshell, the main diffrenece between the ending #'s (AS1410-29xx# represents different colors, black, blue, red, or different HD size, 160 GB or 250 GB.
Other than that the machines are identical. Again, as long as they say they have the SU2300 processor. I settled on the 1410-2920 because I wanted a black case and the other black models with the smaller HD were just not available anymore.

OK, now to the test. I got this computer to act as my main bring along computer. Work, vacation, chillin. I wanted to be able to watch HD videos and stream from HULU, etc... and his seemed to fit the bill according to posts that I read.
The true test was to bring my computer into my job and have the head IT guy work it out. He was somewhat skeptical as he had recommended any netbook with an Nvidia ION chip for HD videos.#which would have worked also but I wanted a dual core processor# He said your computer willprobably choke on HD videos but we'll test it anyway. Well, he hooked up his 250 GB external HD and started playing some HD movies. Bam...NO PROBLEMS. Worked like a charm. Surfice to say he was surprised and impressed. Overall he loved the speed of the computer, size, feel, and the power it had.Felt it was a good value. I value his opinion and the fact that he was impressed was confirmation that I got a great computer. #He runs the IT department with over 500 computers)

Now about the computer.
Keyboard is fine. Nice size, feels good, silent touch.
Size and weight. Perfect. Not to small, like 10" inch netbooks, not to big like 13" notebooks.
Screen size. Excellent, again, not to small, just right.
Speed, very responsive, zips around internet, runs my stock programs with faster speed than my 5 yr old desktop. Excellent.
Mouse pad is fine. No issues.
Bloatware was not bad. Used Revo Uninstaller (freeware) to rid computer of bloat.
WIFI links seemlessly. Fast, easy, automatic.
Battery life is fine. Guessing about 5 hour range.
Black case does attract finger prints. Buying an ivisible shield protector which shoud take care of that. (see link below)
[...]
Bluetooth - none installed, fixed that with a $10 bluetooth dongle. Plugs into USB port when needed. Works great.

product details

Have had this for less than a week but played around with it extensively. Graphics and full-sized keyboard are great and the battery life is fantastic. It was running on the battery for 8 hours normal usage and 5 hours viewing streaming content that output beautifully to my tv via hdmi port.

Minus given in value as price could be lower since you have to purchase an external optical drive. Negative is speaker volume is too low even when maxed out. I'm a musician and have very fine hearing. I found it difficult to clearly hear streaming media. I have ordered headphones and am looking forward to hearing the Dolby Sound Room output through them.

Originally planned to buy an Asus netbook and upgrade RAM/Harddrive but this system has everything- without upgrading. Plus, Intel Core 2 Duo processor is faster than Atom or Celeron. It gets a 3.2 score for system performance. The integrated graphics brings the score down to 3.2 overall with individual scores of: Processor=4.1; RAM=4.8;Hard Disk=5.4; and Graphics= 3.2. That is a higher score than my 17" Vista Acer Laptop.

This small package is a powerful system. I use it in my home theater and for traveling. I love this little pc perhaps more than the fancy desktops that I have built myself.
